Vague/Ambiguous Statement

Recently I ran into an old friend on campus, in which they looked distressed and troubled. I asked if they were okay, and they replied “going to school gets harder and harder each year.” They later explained that they were having difficulty adding classes and attaining enough units for their financial aid; they were stressed that if they didn’t find classes to add soon, they were not going to qualify for financial aid.
However, prior their explanation of the difficulty adding classes, I immediately thought of multiple reasons why “going to school gets harder each year.” I thought that possibly the commute from home to school was getting more strenuous, that classes were either unenjoyable or too difficult, they were struggling with declaring a major, or even that they were struggling financially to keep up with the tuition increase. Because their statement was vague, it wasn’t until they explained themselves that I had a clear understanding of what was causing them such stress.

  1. That's what most of us students would consider school as: stress. I like how you use examples that students like us can relate to and it's something many of us struggle with during the beginning of the semester. It's funny because it feels like I'm reading about myself because it sounds just like me! This is something I would probably complain to myself about school, like getting enough classes in order to be a full-time student to qualify for Financial Aid. Everyone has their own statements about school and it's usually vague. It becomes understanding once they explain it in details for it to be more understanding.

  2. Hi Emoolee! I agree with your example of a vague sentence. Your friends claim was vague because there were so many different ways of interpeting the sentence. School can be hard and stressful for many different reasons. Like Little Miss Blogger said, it was a good example because we can all relate to it. A lot of people have trouble getting into the classes they want or need at SJSU. Luckily, I haven't had too much trouble getting into the classes I want. I'm certain it will get more difficult in future years! It is good that she explained the reason why she thought "going to school gets harder and harder each year."

  3. It's funny that you used this as your example because I was just telling my friend the exact same thing the other day at school. She then had me explain myself more as to why school seemed so hard this semester and seemed to get harder each year. I have had the most trouble getting into pre-requisite classes for Nursing, such as biology.
I did not realize, until just now, how vague my comment to her was about school. I really like how you explained the situation in a fair amount of detail. It helped me to really see how that comment was really vague and could have meant a lot of different things unless specifically explained.

  5. I found your post depressing to be honest; not that it was bad but it is basically the truth about school. It IS getting more and more difficult to add classes and people are finding it harder to even stay at State, considering what little they have to choose from the "left-over classes". I agree with Rossi; your example is a vague one because school getting harder and harder each year can pertain to many different things. I feel lucky that I have not had problems adding classes but for me, school is getting harder each year. I came to State with a laid-back attitude but now, I find that I have to work 10X as hard as everyone else because I don't consider myself a whiz. But yeah, good example to use because I'm sure everyone can relate to school getting harder each year, one way or another.

  6. When I read your post, I felt the same way. I felt that your friend's situation is related to me somehow. It is not just school, but life get harder and harder everyday. The economic situation of the U.S. have caused dramatic results on us- students. Due to the budget cut, I cannot add more classes and graduate as I planned. I am very disappointed because I want to finish college and then go back to my country where my family is. However, the economy's downfall, the budget cut, the unit's cut, ect. completely ruin my plan. I felt very bad for students because the school is just making money out of us. They do not give anything back though since we just pay for what we need. They increase the tuition every year(we are charged for the student union fee this year). They even charged us for what we never use such as: VTA transportation(many of us drive), health fee(not many students go to the health center),ect. It's not fair when they just charge student fees without letting us choose the service we need. They even make money out of customized books or used books(they bought used book for very cheap prices). I just felt very depressed and disappointed right now.
